Dubai traffic calming: 71% of Al Shindagha Corridor project completed by RTA

The project is part of Phase 4 of the RTA's Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project, which includes Sheikh Rashid Road from the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street junction to the Falcon junction on Al Mina Street.

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the opening of a three-lane bridge connecting Sheikh Rashid Road to the Infinity Bridge.

The project is part of Phase 4 of the Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project, which bridges Sheikh Rashid Road from the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street intersection to the Falcon Interchange on Al Mina Street.

The project spans 4.8 kilometres and includes three bridges with a total length of 3.1 kilometres that can accommodate 19,400 vehicles per hour, Dubai Media Office said in a statement.

RTA has announced that 71 per cent of Phase 4 is complete - the second bridge on Sheikh Rashid Road, which connects the Al Mina intersection with Sheikh Rashid Road to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, will open in the first half of January.

"The Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project is being implemented on the instructions of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, Ruler of Dubai, and is being closely monitored by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council," said Mattar Al Tayer, CEO, Chairman of the RTA Board of Executive Directors.

"The project aims to keep pace with the ongoing development in the area along the corridor and address urban and population growth requirements. The new bridge enhances the flow of traffic from Sheikh Rashid Road to Infinity Bridge, starting from the intersection of Sheikh Rashid Road with Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, continuing to the intersection of Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street with Al Mina Street and on to Infinity Bridge," Al Tayer added.

Phase 4 includes three bridges - the first bridge, 1,335 metres long with three lanes in each direction, connects Sheikh Rashid Road to Falcon Interchange and can accommodate 10,800 vehicles per hour.

The second bridge, 780 metres long with three lanes, connects the Falcon Interchange with Al Wasl Road and accommodates 5 400 vehicles per hour. The third bridge, 985 metres long with two lanes, connects Jumeirah Street to Al Mina Street and handles 3 200 vehicles per hour.

The project includes 4.8 kilometres of roads, surface intersection improvements, two pedestrian bridges, street lighting, traffic systems, a storm water drainage network and an irrigation system.

"The Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project is one of the largest initiatives currently being undertaken by RTA." The project includes Sheikh Rashid Road, Al Mina Street, Al Khaleej Street and Cairo Street for a total length of 13 kilometres and includes the development of 15 intersections. Due to its size, the project has been divided into five phases. The corridor serves the cities of Deira and Bur Dubai as well as several major development projects including Dubai Islands, Deira Waterfront, Dubai Maritime City and Port Rashid. An estimated one million residents will benefit from the project," Al Tayer said.

The project is expected to reduce travel time from 104 minutes to 16 minutes by 2030 and is projected to save AED 45 billion over 20 years.

Al Tayer highlighted several completed phases, including the upgrading of Sheikh Rashid Road and Oud Metha Street (Wafi junction) and Sheikh Rashid Road and Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street.

The works included two bridges on Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, a one-lane bridge from Zabeel Street and a tunnel on Sheikh Rashid Road. Five bridges on Al Khaleej Street and Abu Baker Al Siddique Street provide access to the Dubai Islands.

RTA also opened a three-lane bridge on Al Khaleej Street towards Bur Dubai and a surface crossing connecting Al Khaleej Street to Omar bin Al Khattab Street. The Infinity Bridge, with six lanes in each direction and a pedestrian and cycle path, has a 42-metre high arch in the shape of the infinity symbol.

Falcon Junction Improvements

The Falcon Interchange project includes two bridges on Al Khaleej Street. The first, 750 metres long, is for northbound traffic, while the second, 1,075 metres long, is for southbound traffic.

Both have six lanes in each direction with a total capacity of 24,000 vehicles per hour. The project includes a one-lane right turn bridge, a two-lane left turn tunnel and a surface intersection connecting Al Khaleej Street with Al Ghubaiba Street and Khalid bin Al Waleed Street.
