Dubai Walk: Sheikh Mohammed has approved an extensive 6,500 km pedestrian network

Dubai has approved a comprehensive plan to build more than 6,500 kilometres of walking trails, aiming to turn the emirate into a walkable city by 2040.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced the 'Dubai Walk' project, which will see the creation of 3,300 kilometres of new walking trails and the rehabilitation of 2,300 kilometres of existing trails.

The plan aims to increase pedestrian movement from 13% to 25% by 2040 and includes the construction of 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels to improve connectivity between cities, according to an official statement.

We have approved the Dubai Walks Master Plan, a 6,500km network of modern walkways covering 160 areas across the emirate. The plan includes the construction of 3,300 km of new walkways and the rehabilitation of 2,300 km of existing walkways by 2040, in addition to more than 900 km of walkways planned after 2040. It also includes the construction of 110 bridges and pedestrian underpasses to improve connectivity. This ambitious plan aims to increase pedestrian and soft mobility from 13% to 25% by 2040," said Sheikh Mohammed.
The project rwill be implemented in three phases, with a pilot phase starting between 2025 and 2027. There will also be three models of walkways: the Scenic-Leisure walkways, the City Connectivity walkways and the Community walkways.
It includes a variety of trail models, including 112 kilometres of waterfront trails, 64 kilometres of urban trails, 124 kilometres of greenways and 150 kilometres of rural and mountain trails.
"Dubai is a city of the future that is committed to creating a healthy and happy urban environment. The Dubai Walking Master Plan promotes active lifestyles and provides opportunities for all to move, making walking a central part of our culture and everyday life. This vision will make Dubai one of the healthiest and most sustainable cities in the world," added Sheikh Mohammed.
Key areas of focus include the historic Al Ras area and the Museum of the Future, where an iconic two-kilometre bridge will connect ten important sites.
The bridge will have 30,000 square metres of air-conditioned floor space and an equal area of open spaces with shading features.
