Sheikh Mohammed visited the headquarters of Dubai Aerospace Engineering Projects along with Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.

The Ruler of Dubai has approved the proposals for the new passenger terminal as part of Dubai Aviation Corporation's strategy and construction will begin. "Al Maktoum International Airport will have the largest capacity in the world, reaching up to 260 million passengers. It will be five times the size of the current Dubai International Airport and all the operations of Dubai International Airport will be transferred to it in the coming years. The airport will accommodate 400 aircraft gates and have five parallel runways. For the first time, new aviation technologies will be used in the aviation sector," Sheikh Mohammed said.

The future airport, which covers an area of 70 square kilometres, will have a capacity of more than 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per annum when completed.

Sheikh Mohammed was briefed on the key design elements and strategic plan for the airport's implementation. "With the continued support and blessing of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and in line with his vision for the aviation industry in Dubai, we announce the launch of the design and construction process for the new airport in Jebel Ali. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed within 10 years and will have a capacity of 150 million passengers per annum," said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed, adding that the new airport will be more than five times larger than DXB Airport and will prepare for the expected growth of Dubai's aviation sector over the next 40 years.

The airport will use the latest technology and provide passengers with state-of-the-art facilities and services. It will have five parallel runways, western and eastern apron terminals, four satellite concourses with more than 400 aircraft contact stands and an integrated ground transportation hub for roads, metro and urban air transport.Sustainability is a key theme and the airport aims to reduce environmental emissions and achieve LEED Gold certification, Sheikh Ahmed said.

"The construction of this new airport will be an integral part of Dubai's economy and a significant contribution to Dubai's economic programme (D33). It is estimated that it will create a need for manpower and housing for more than one million people living and working in Dubai's southern part (aerotropolis), which has been under construction and operation since 2007," said Khalifa Al Zaffin, Executive Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation.Suzanne Al Anani, CEO of Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, added: "Dubai is once again leading the way.

With a commitment to maintaining our leadership role in the aviation sector globally, this airport development will represent a completely new approach to airport design. The exponential acceleration of technology and the wealth of knowledge in innovation will drive us to reinvent the passenger journey and experience. "In coordination with our strategic partners, connectivity and accessibility is also a priority, ensuring efficient public transport links and reducing reliance on private transport, which will support the reduction of the project's carbon footprint," she said.
